Personal Life
Amanda Burton was born on October 10th 1956 in Ballougry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. She was the youngest of four daughters. Her Irish father was the headmaster of the local school that she attended which had around 20 pupils. Her Grandfather was W.A. Burton a well known artist whose speciality was architectural drawings. Her parents were also keen amateur actors and this interest was passed on to a young Amanda. Amanda left her home town of Northern Ireland when she was just 18 years old and secured a place at Manchester’s Polytechnic's School of Film, TV and Theatre. She was very homesick during her time away. When she completed her studies she joined the Octagon Theatre in Bolton as an assistant stage manager and has fond memories of getting her first pay packet. One of Amanda's earliest jobs was working behind the scenes on the Rod Hull and Emu show working the puppets! She also once had a jewellery stall in Manchester selling her own handmade items. Amanda Burton's first marriage was to Jonathan Hartley in 1977 and this ended in 1982. Amanda was also married to Swedish photographer Sven Arnstein in 1989 and they had two daughters, Phoebe who was born in 1989 and Brid who was born in 1991. Their marriage ended in 2004. She met Sven on the set of Brookside after he came to take some publicity shots of her. Amanda is now happily engaged to Stephen Colover and was spotted wearing a diamond engagement ring in July 2007 during an interview with Yours Magazine. Her new love is also a photographer and has done work for the likes of Vogue and Tatler magazine. When confronted about the large engagement ring during the interview for her newest series of The Commander, she stated how happy she was with her new love. In steps Jack Kerruish (Kevin Whately) who had just returned from spending three years in Africa and now wanted to settle down as a country GP. There was chemistry’s from the onset with the two characters but Dr Glover played it cool and didn’t want Jack Kerruish working at the surgery since she thought he had the wrong image and wouldn’t fit in. However after persuasion from her friend Isabel and Dr Will Preston she gave in and offered him a six month stay with a view to a partnership. As time progressed Jack and Beth did eventually get together and got married in Series 2. Tragedy struck in Series 3 when Beth miscarried there longed for baby and it resulted in her wanting more from life. She and Jack left Cardale and went to Africa for a six month sabbatical. Beth and Jack never returned to Cardale and so they exited at the end of series 3 in 1995. Peak Practice was eventually axed in 2002 and replaced by short lived drama Sweet Medicine much to the annoyance of Peak Practice fans around the world! Peak Practice remains one of the most memorable moments in Amanda Burton's career. Series 1 - 3 staring on Amanda is now available on DVD to buy from online retailers. Her youngest daughter Brid made a guest appearance in the final show with Amanda. She played a younger version of Amanda’s character Sam Ryan. The Gift (1998) This was Amanda portraying Lynn a woman dying of cancer. It was an extremely moving performance demonstrating a mother's love for her daughter whilst trying to hide her illness so that her daughter only had happy memories of her. BBC Radio 4 In yet another dramatic role only this time on the radio called “This Was A Mother” she plays a character set on ensuring that her daughter makes a success of a musical career, but risking destroying a promising debut. The story was told as part of BBC Radio 4's Dubliner's season. Silent Witness Parodies As a bank holiday special famous British comedians Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders performed "Witless Silence" Amanda herself said on the BBC show Parkinson that she found the sketch really funny. Another parody was done by Dead Ringers with Sam Ryan as an overconfident pathologist who makes incredibly specific guesses about the body; for example, “Just by looking I can tell that this was a man aged 35-37 called John, having an affair with his secretary,” only to be proved wrong by one of her assistants. She then refuses to accept her mistake claiming “wrong?” “Oh I'm never wrong. I'm forensics professor Sam Ryan PhD.” Forgotten (1999) In early 1999 Amanda teamed up with Paul McGann to star in a three-part psychological thriller for LWT, entitled Forgotten in which she played Rachel Monroe. The series, set in a picturesque village, was actually filmed in the Cotswolds. Black Bear Rescue - Born To Be Wild (2000) During 1999 and part of 2000 BBC producer Michael Massey and his crew visited from London several times to film the documentary "Black Bear Rescue - Born To Be Wild". Amanda hosted the documentary. The show was screened on television in October 2000 about the rescue of two orphaned ten week old bear cubs called Tippe and Techumseh in the Payette National Forest in Idaho. Their mother was knocked down and killed by a car and with wolves closing in the chances of the cubs surviving where slim. Over an 18 month period Amanda made three trips to Idaho to check on the cub's progress, having to face sub zero temperatures and lots of flying, something she is not keen on. She had to fit all this in around a hectic UK filming schedule which included more episodes of Silent Witness, the new thriller The Whistle Blower and the feature length drama Little Bird. On each of her visit to Idaho Amanda was amazed at how much the cubs had grown and developed. The show gave an insight in how Amanda the person was off screen, she came across as a very relaxed person and was more than willing to do her share of dirty jobs when it came to feeding and mucking out! When she first saw them she was able to pick them up and cuddle them, on the second trip she could play with them in their cage, but by the third visit they were getting pretty wild. Amanda found that one of the toughest requirements of the whole thing was not to get too emotional and when it was time to release the bears back into the wild Amanda shed a few tears. Meanwhile, Laura stays behind to testify. Helen West (2002) In April 2002 Amanda returned to British television as Crown Prosecutor Helen West in three dramas based on the bestselling books by Frances Fyfield. The series entitled Helen West consisted of three episodes “Shadow Play,” “Deep Sleep” and “A Clear Conscience” which were all dark, densely plotted affairs. For the series Amanda lightened up in more ways than one. For the part she lightened her hair and her body language and is a much lighter person altogether. For her role as Helen West she prepared by conducting her own investigation into the workings of the CPS which she found very interesting. There are also two books for Helen West by Frances Fyfield in which Amanda is on the cover of them.
